Neurodiversity in the Writing Center
The Carleton College Writing Center lies at the heart of the Gould Library in Northfield, Minnesota. Visitors sit by stained glass lamps and sip tea while brainstorming for papers about the mathematics of the zombie apocalypse or reorganizing thirty page senior theses. Each year, writers from across the college attend hundreds of one-on-one appointments with a staff of over twenty consultants from various academic departments.
In collaboration with the Office of Disability Services, I created a center-wide training about neurodiversity. By building consultants’ Universal Design for Learning (UDL) skill set and emphasizing socio-emotional learning (SEL), the training increased accessibility without requiring writers to disclose disabilities.

Veteran consultants described the training as one of the “most impactful” they had received at the Writing Center. The training was delivered by a new cycle of consultants in following years and incorporated into Writing Center resources on accessibility.
